The Butterfly (© Tommy Potts)

An ancient Irish tradition has it that butterflies are dead souls waiting for admission to Purgatory. The slip jig entitled The Butterfly is usually ascribed to a fiddler named Tommy Potts (1912-88) and is supposed to imitate the aimless flight of the butterfly.

Calliope House (© Dave Richardson)

The Calliope House is a centre of trad music in Pittsburgh; moreover, the very first recording of this tune was to be heard on the answerphone of the place. - Counting as the first among the nine Muses of ancient Greece, Calliope (Grk. 'the fair-voiced') is known to be the patron goddess of music and epic poetry. Daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, the Muses entertained the gods at their banquets on Mount Olymp. Even old Hesiod was ordained as poet by the Muses as early as 700 BC.

Rights of Man (© Trad. Scottish)

The tune is named after Thomas Paine's (1737-1809) essay of the same title, which once figured as the "bible" of the United Irishmen, rebels of 1798 fame (unfortunately, "The universal and peace-loving pan-celticism against belligerent germanicism as well as English imperialism" was grossly dismissed as title of this album, on the grounds of its subtle harbouring of anachronistic tribalism...). Speaking of human rights: In 1998, a Dublin pub had its licence revoked after a black woman had been refused entry. Accordingly, one-time president Mary Robinson, now human-rights commissioner with the UN, once complained about the parochial attitude of the Irish, who refuse to understand that people coming to Ireland from abroad may enrich Irish culture (with 3,000 refugees in the whole of Ireland roughly amounting to half of the Irish population of Munich...).

Walkin' Tom's Jig (© Trad/Keller 1999)

Die folkloristische Art des Komponierens: Der A-Teil ist ,Old John's Jig' entnommen, der B-Teil eine Jig-Version des ,Star of Mu[e]nster'. Darf man daraus einfach ,Walkin' Tom's' machen? Jhd. Francis O'Neill (1848-1936), Tune-Sammler und Polizeichef von Chicago, gibt als seine Quelle den Piper James O'Brien aus Mayo an (1876): "One of his peculiarities - and an unpleasant one, occasionally - was a habit of stopping the music in order to indulge in conversation. He could not be induced to play a tune in full, when under the influence of stimulants, as his loquacity was uncontrollable, and he never hesitated under such conditions to express a passing sentiment." Noch Fragen?
